Everybody loves poems. They convey sentiment and emotion in well-chosen often rhyming words. That's why people especially women, love poems. Thus poems are very much a part of an occasion like Mothers Day. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to write a personal one for your mother? What? You don't think you can? I've got good news for you, then. You CAN. It does not have to be perfect as long as it is from the heart. Here’s a simple method to write your own poem for your mother.
The first step is to think of what to write about. You can think of something you love or admire about your mother such as her love, patience, forgiving nature or a combination of those. Another good topic to write about is your relationship with her in the past, present and future. You could even write about your mother's looks for that matter. Obviously, you should choose something good to write about.
Your theme will determine the title of your poem. Some people come up with the title at the beginning of their writing while others prefer to think of it only after they have completed their poem. Either way will do.
Now when it comes to writing, your poem can be written in different formats. The most common one is the four lines a verse format. But there is no hard and fast rule. A poem may be any number of lines. Some poems may consist of only single lines.
A big part of writing your poem is to choose the right words. Normally, poems have words that rhyme. So choose some well-chosen words that rhyme and write your poem around those words. Do you think it's difficult to find rhyming words? Not really. I will show you how
Rhyming words can be classified into four basic categories.
1. Words with the same suffixes or endings such as ‘tion’, ‘ty’, ‘al’, ‘er’, ‘est’, ‘ly’ etc.
For example, mother rhymes with brother, sister, father, greater, lovelier etc.
2. Words with completely different spelling but the similar sounds. For example, sky rhymes with goodbye and why, guy rhymes with pie and my.
3. Words with partly the same spelling. For example, girl rhymes with pearl, friend rhymes with send, sat rhymes with hat, mat, fat etc.
4. Words that sound similar enough to be considered as rhyming. For example, ocean and mountain or hand with end.
The last thing to consider in poem writing is to have the same (or almost the same) number of syllables for each line or every other line. This makes your poem pleasant to read. This also enhances the quality of your poem.
I wrote this original Mother’s Day poem using the above tips I just shared with you. And with this I end with wishing you a truly wonderful Mother’s Day.
MOTHER YOU ARE TO ME
Mother you are to me
My joy and inspiration
In you I always see
A life of full devotion
Mother you are to me
My hope when I am down
Though others may desert me
You will always be around
Mother you are to me
A warm hug and smiling face
I’m a living legacy
Of your wisdom, love and grace
